We're all guilty of it. Driving while distracted. Whether it's as simple of changing the radio station, checking on the kids in the back seat or looking at your mobile phone, we've probably all done it at some point. We've become self proclaimed experts of multi-tasking, and while it's great in some areas of life, that's not true while we are on the road.
According to the National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB) distracted driving claimed 3,000 lives nationwide in 2015 and was the direct cause of over 400,000 injuries. Not only are these claims one of the main reason for the recent increases in auto insurance rates, but they are almost entirely avoidable. The largest affected age group is 18-24 year olds, and we have to stop this before it gets even more severe.
The problem has gotten so bad, that California passed two new laws beginning in 2017 in the hopes of reducing these figures. In order to use a wireless communication device in your car it has to be hands free, voice operated and mounted on your dashboard, console or windshield. Drivers are allowed one "swipe" to use for navigation purposes, but that's it. And if you've got young drivers under 18, there cannot be ANY visible electronic communication devices anywhere in the state of California.
At Gateway Professional Insurance Services, we want you to be safe on the road, and to be only focused on the road around you. Setting an example for younger drivers starts at home, and we want to encourage you to "Sign the Pledge" to stop distracted driving.
Visit this link, share it to your social media page and spread the word. After all, April is Distracted Driving awareness month, and we want to ask you to join us in preventing these accidents.
