Almost 8 million vehicles are being recalled due to defective and dangerous air bags that are installed in the vehicles. The air bags are manufactured by Takata, and explode with too much force, causing metal and plastic shards to be thrown into the car, which could cause seriously injuries to the passengers in the vehicle.
There are 10 automakers that have been affected by the recall, including Ford, BMW, Nissan, Toyota, Subaru, Honda, Acura, and Mazda. The defective air bags have been installed in vehicles from 2002 to 2008. If your car has been affected by the recall, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA encourages you, to take your car to a dealership to get it checked out.
Takata has apologized for the problems and stated that they are doing everything they can to help solve the problem. So far, they think the issue is linked with the chemicals in the airbag, which cause it to explode. If the chemicals come into contact with any type of moisture, they explode without warning and with too much force. Since moisture seems to be the cause, people who are living in hot and humid areas, such as Texas, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia are at the highest risk.
You can check to see if your vehicle is on the recall list by contacting the NHTSA and providing them with your VIN number. If your car is on the recall list, you will have to wait for a replacement air bag since there are not enough spare bags to deal with the problem.
