Term Insurance
It's the basics:
- Protection for a specified period of
time.
- Ideal for covering a specific need.
|
- Initial low cost.
- Convertible to permanent life insurance.
|
Term Insurance pays a benefit only if you die
during the specified period of coverage. Some policies give you the
option to renew coverage when the term expires. The premium
increases at each renewal date. If your objective is maximum
protection for a limited period at the lowest cost, term insurance
is usually your best choice. Depending on your needs and
preferences, you can choose from several kinds of term insurance
policies.
Most term policies can be converted to permanent insurance. Term
policies become more costly as a person gets older. This is
because the rates are not spread out over the lifetime, as they
are with most "permanent" or cash-value plans. Term
policies are based only on a specified period of coverage. If you
renew for another period, your premium is based on your age at
renewal for the next term.
The Pros and Cons of Term
Insurance Advantages:
- Lower premiums, generally, than those for permanent
insurance, which allows the insured to buy higher levels of
coverage at a younger age when the need for protection is often
the highest.
- A Good Solution, for covering specific needs that
will disappear in time, such as mortgages and car loans.
Disadvantages:
- Premiums Increase, as one gets older
- Coverage may not be renewable, at the end of the
term, or may become too expensive to continue.
- No Cash Value or paid-up insurance, generally.
